Boston Children’s Hospital’s Declaration on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity
Boston Children’s is dedicated to creating a culture where all patients, families, clinicians, researchers, staff, and communities feel empowered and supported. We are committed to working together to support health equity and promote anti-racist practices. Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion
Boston Children’s Hospital is where the world’s families come for answers. To be a part of our team is to know that every contribution you make can make a profound difference. It’s to understand that the care we provide includes everything from brain surgery to food service. And it’s to experience the promise that every act of kindness inspires healing and growth – not just for our patients, families, and colleagues – but for our communities alike.
Here, the quality of our care lies in the diverse backgrounds, skills, and contributions of our people. With patients from both local communities and 160 countries around the world, we are deeply committed to reflecting the spectrum of their cultures, while opening doors of opportunity for every member of our team – and the communities that surround us. Because when we’re united in our differences, while pursuing common goals, all things are possible.
Our commitment to diversity has inspired the following initiatives.
The Declaration on Equity and Diversity
As part of a national reckoning with racism, health disparities, and social injustice, Boston Children’s created our Declaration on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity.
As we plan and strategize for the future, the goals of this Declaration serve as guideposts to recognize the impact of racism on children’s health, promote optimal health for our diverse patients, and make Boston Children’s a welcoming place for all who seek our care — and every person who works here. Our declaration memorializes Boston Children’s Hospital’s commitment to diversity in our community, and helps ensure that every employee at Boston Children’s Hospital understands the goals of the organization with respect to providing a work environment that promotes respect, equity, inclusion, collaboration and commitment to one another.
These goals are our commitment, inspiration, and inform every decision we make. Here are just a few:
- Boston Children’s is committed to being an inclusive environment that does not tolerate any form of racism, discrimination, or bias.
- Boston Children’s is committed to eliminating structural racism from all policies, guidelines, and practices.
- Boston Children’s is committed to being a leader in eliminating child health disparities in our community and our nation.
Office of Health Equity and Inclusion
Health disparities pose a serious threat to children from marginalized populations. In response to this, we’ve created The Office of Health Equity and Inclusion to close the gaps in health and health outcomes. Ensuring an inclusive environment that does not tolerate any form of racism, discrimination, or bias is central to all that we do.
In pursuing our objectives, we work collaboratively with divisions and departments at Boston Children’s and Harvard Medical School, including the Office of Faculty Development, the Boston Children’s Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship, Health Affairs, the Office of Graduate Medical Education, the Office of Experience, and Human Resources.
Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Council
Boston Children’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Council was established in 2006 to further our commitment to diversity and provide culturally effective pediatric health care. The EDI Council was formed with the support of Senior Leadership and has been a key part of enterprise-wide diversity efforts. Council members represent multiple disciplines and sectors from all levels of the enterprise and are guided by an executive steering committee consisting of Senior Leadership and Executive Management.
Members of the EDI Council, in conjunction with Senior Leadership, were integral in coordinating the establishment of the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion.
